The Active Learning Space Symposium at Philadelphia University on August 12 features presentations that highlight evidence-based and experimental processes in the design, implementation and assessment of active learning spaces.  The forum provides an excellent opportunity to share experiences and thoughts about the way the built environment and technologies can support, nurture, and optimize active learning pedagogies.

Presentation: "Lessons Learned from Planning & Implementing Active Learning Spaces"

The planning stage is the 'make or break' step in determining the overall success of campus wide initiatives that strive to renew learning spaces that enhance active learning strategies. Through several small (individual classrooms) to large (new buildings) experiences with planning and implementing active learning spaces on our campus, one pivotal lesson learned has been getting the 'right' stake-holders into the planning stage and fostering productive discussions that will optimize the final spaces for all involved (faculty, students, IT, etc.). Using active learning methods, participants in this session will identify strategies to maximize campus-wide ‘buy-in’ from all stakeholders before environments are built. We will identify those planning team members’ characteristics that lead to productive planning and implementation of active learning spaces and discuss strategies for orchestrating planning teams that represent all stakeholders’ agendas and interests. This session is highly relevant to institutions thinking about embarking on learning space transformations that will align with active, collaborative, real-world teaching coupled with mindful use of technologies that support collaborative pedagogies.

Campus Tour: Active Learning Spaces @ Philly U

This event also includes a campus tour highlighting Philadelphia University's experimentation and implementation of both formal (classrooms, studios, labs, building-wide) and informal (student center, library) learning spaces. These are innovative, mindfully-designed physical spaces with appropriate technologies which foster active, collaborative, real-world teaching and learning.

PADLA Meeting: Microsoft Technology Center Tour & Software/Hardware Demos

You are cordially invited to join the PA/DE/NJ Distance Learning Association for a visit to the truly state-of-the-art Microsoft Technology Center in Malvern, PA. Whether you are in Corporate, Non-Profit, Higher Ed, or K-12, there will be something for everyone to see and learn.

During this visit, Microsoft Mid-Atlantic representatives will be conducting tours of their impressive facility and discuss some of the emerging Windows 10 based technologies such as Surface Hub and Hololens. This will be followed by in-depth presentations of software products including the PowerPoint MIX add-in allowing users to easily create and share interactive online e-Learning videos and OneNote Class Notebook Creator software to develop lessons in digital notebooks for educators/trainers.

ABOUT OUR HOST

The Malvern MTC has been in operation since 2011, and is co-located with the field sales offices for the northern contingent of employees representing the Mid-Atlantic Sales District of Microsoft. The facility is an executive-class showcase designed to highlight the great solutions that Microsoft has to offer for all types of customers. Tim Pash, the Director, has a team of Architects who are experts in their field and that collaborate to ensure customers understand what our capabilities are and can clearly map them to the business issues they face. Besides enterprise customers, the facility hosts Professional User Groups, Community and K-12 student events, etc. One of our goals is to keep high utilization and to make a positive impression of Microsoft to as many people as possible.   Please consider the facility for the next team offsite, customer event, or executive meeting you need to conduct.

Drexel 2015 e-Learning Conference - Call for Proposals

 Call for Proposals

The 2015 e-Learning Conference, which is being held on Wednesday, March 25^th in the Papadakis Integrated Sciences Building on Drexel University’s University City Campus, is currently accepting proposal submissions. Proposals are for presentations that will run for 45 minutes on topics related to the use of technology in teaching and learning. Individuals can fill out the form located at:

Proposals are due by January 23, 2015 and will be reviewed after that deadline, with final decisions on which have been selected being sent out in early February. For our Tech Day "meet", 1) watch our short video instruction, 2) post your own ideas to share, and 3) view other submissions and give them feedback. 

Tell us how you are currently using technology in your classroom.  We are especially interested in any problems you see in face to face instruction that you think technology might be a solution for!  For example, if a snow day prevents face-to-face instruction, technology might offer a way to deliver content without missing instructional days. Once you upload your video, you will be able to return to the program and view the videos of other participants.

In this session you'll explore David Merrill’s Pebble in the Pond (PiP) instructional design model for problem-based learning and consider how it can also be applied to game-based learning design.

The presenter, Andy Petroski, coordinates the Learning Technologies Master of Science (LTMS) program and learning technologies at Harrisburg University as Director of Learning Technologies and Assistant Professor of Learning Technologies. His work at Harrisburg University has included efforts in the areas of educational technology strategy, games and simulations, classroom technology, web 2.0, patient education, social learning and faculty development.

NMC Horizon Report: 2013 Higher Education Edition

The New Media Consortium (NMC) Horizon Report is an unbiased source of information that helps education leaders, trustees, policy makers, and others easily understand the impact of key emerging technologies on education, and when they are likely to enter mainstream use.

The 2013 Horizon Report is a decade-long research project designed to identify and describe emerging technologies likely to have an impact on learning, teaching, and creative inquiry in higher education. Lecture Fail? Long Live the Lecture!

There has been a lot of talk lately on the lecture and whether it is better to flip the classroom and have students watch videos of lecture material and use class time for interaction with the instructor and group activities. Is the classroom lecture dead? You decide.

Jeff Young has posted an enlightening series in The Chronicle where he has challenged students to post videos of what they think of lectures (mostly boring) and challenged faculty to respond, again by posting Youtube videos.

This response from David Miller at the University of Connecticut illustrates how instructors can transform boring PowerPoints into engaging lecture presentations.

Catherine Bentzley - 1st Prize Winner

Winners of the first 60-second lecture contest were announced at the grand opening of USciences’ new Technology Training Center. Faculty were invited to utilize the Panopto lecture capture software to submit 60-second lectures for fun or for serious consumption.

The entries were judged by a panel of USciences deans with the top prize going to Associate Professor Catherine Bentzley. Fittingly, USciences Executive Director of Academic Technology Dr. Rod Murray, announced the winners via Panopto.

The Technology Training Center, located in the McNeil Science and Technology Center, was established to meet the needs of faculty through hands-on learning and demonstrations. The room is equipped with 12 new iMac computers that can run the Mac OS or boot into a Windows environment as well as provide access to the tools and equipment found in the classrooms.

USciences 60-Second Lecture Contest Promotes New Technology Training Center and Panopto Platform

Lights! Camera! Record! University of the Sciences is inviting its faculty to take part in a 60-second lecture contest and the chance to win an iPad2. The contest is showcasing the ease of the Panopto lecture capture software and promoting the opening of USciences’ new Technology Training Center.

“Whether the lectures are funny or educational, it’s a great way for the faculty to take advantage of the Panopto platform,” said Dr. Rod Murray, USciences Executive Director of Academic Technology.

The Technology Training Center, located in the McNeil Science and Technology Center, was established to meet the needs of faculty through hands-on learning and demonstrations. The room is equipped with 12 new iMac computers that can run the Mac OS or boot into a Windows environment as well as provide access to the tools and equipment found in the classrooms.

“We now have a dedicated lab for technology training,” said Rich Cosgriff, Jr. (pictured at above), who was recently announced as USciences director of classroom technology and will oversee the Technology Training Center. “Routinely scheduled workshops will be offered to faculty on such things as student response systems, Panopto, or web 2.0 tools to enhance the classroom experience.”

Cosgriff comes to USciences with over 10 years of experience in higher education most recently as instructional technology specialist with SunGard Higher Education where he was based at Immaculata University. He is responsible for classroom technology, learning space design and renovation, and the development and delivery of classroom technology training and workshops as well as supervising the A/V technicians.

The 60-second lecture contest closes on Nov. 11 and will be judged by an independent panel that will rank the submissions and name the winner. A showcase of the 60-second lectures captured on Panopto and the winner will be announced at the grand opening of the Technology Training Center on Thursday, Nov. 17.

The Office of Academic Technology is about to offer Panopto, a flexible and easy-to-use presentation capture platform that lets faculty or staff capture, edit, stream, archive and share recordings that preserve critical knowledge.

Speaking Tour Series with Closed Captioning: Lawrence Lessig, Founder, Creative Commons, Professor of Law at Stanford University
Panopto sponsored the Sara Fine Institute's hosting of Lawrence Lessig, a renowned author and political activist. This is another good example of the power and utility of integrated, searchable closed captioning.

Interactive Whiteboard Recording: Northwest University
When SBI helped Northwest University outfit their classrooms with interactive whiteboards, they conducted a series of training sessions for faculty so that they could learn how to effectively use the new classroom technology. No one missed the training sessions because they were recorded with Panopto Focus!

	Podium Lecture: Nick Laudato, CIDDE, University of Pittsburgh Nick Laudato introduces the original version of Panopto Focus to the University of Pittsburgh system. This example demonstrates good videography, audio quality and overall high production processes.
	Desktop Presentation: Carnegie Mellon University This is a great example of a simple desktop recording. Professor Lee used an off the shelf DV camera to record an introduction to his incoming students.
	Two Camera / Hi-Resolution Recording: Carnegie Mellon University, Genetics Class Lecture Many professors depend on chalkboards or other non-digital presentation tools, and this is where our our multi-camera, high-definition support comes in handy.
	Focus Case Study: Miami-Dade College Mark Nestor, CIO of Miami-Dade College's Medical Campus, gives an overview of lecture capture technology, including a run-down of Panopto Focus use at MDC.
	How-To Video: Lebanon-Cornwall School District We love this example. It is an innovative use of Panopto Focus to create a quick-and-dirty "how to" for use of projector systems. We use this internally!

Lecture Capture using Mediasite

Lecture capture is already an important component of classroom technology at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. Lecture capture allows instructors to record what happens in their classrooms and make it available electronically through our Angel LMS. We use Mediasite in the major lecture halls to capture high quality video of the instructor and everything that is projected in class, including the instructors desktop computer screen (e.g., web sites, applications, PowerPoint slides), document camera output or hand-writing on the interactive podium display.

Lecture capture systems offer three important benefits:

• an alternative when students miss class
• an opportunity for course content review
• and content for online course development.

Starting with the new fiscal year this July, the University's hard working AV technicians, Bill Horton and Clifford Greer, were officially transferred to the Academic Technology Department from the Library.

To avoid confusion about how to request classroom audio/visual services, here are your new choices:
