PRESENTATION

New digital learning technologies, such as Gamification and Virtual Reality, are constantly being added to the set of tools available to learning organizations. Some work other and others don’t. John Royer, Founder & Managing Partner of InSiteHub, is an award- winning learning strategist and technologist, and an expert in learning trends, will present a studied look at the impact of learning technologies over time.

John will share his insights into how technologies including micro learning, gamification, badging, nano-degrees, confidence based testing and e-portfolios are being implemented together to drive the latest trends in micro credentialing and ultimately sustainable competencies for corporate learning. John will also examine how online coaching, new platforms, and Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality fit into the corporate learning strategies of the future.

Representatives from our host, Wilmington University, will also conduct tours of their gamification lab, learning technologies lab, and discuss details of their Collaborative Work Program.

PADLA: Learning Technology Tour & Workshop

PADLA invites you to join us in exploring hot topics in the world of learning technologies. One presentation will address the next step in the creation of virtual reality learning technology and the other will explore the creation of a new methodology to meet the challenge of learning retention.

Villanova CAVE Tour

Attendees will take part in a guided tour of Villanova University's Immersive Studies CAVE which provides viewers with an immersive experience viewing and interacting with 3D virtual-reality worlds, 3D big-data displays, and 3D models of real-world locations and objects. Some of the facility's features include:

• An 18-ft wide by 10-ft deep by 7.5-ft high enclosure within which viewers can interact with a virtual world.
• A extendable projected ceiling. This means the Villanova CAVE can be operated to project on either three walls and a floor, or three walls and a ceiling.
• Integration with a robot (Seemore) designed at Villanova that carries a spherically immersive video camera array for capturing video that covers 360 degrees horizontally and 280 degrees vertically. This video can be played and controlled interactively in the Villanova CAVE.
• A commitment to support researchers across Villanova as well as collaborate with academic and industry researchers around the world.

Nine Ways to Implement Continuous Learning and Solve the Forgetting Problem

Attendees will actively participate in a workshop conducted by Steve Just, Chief Learning Officer of Intela Learning. This workshop covers the science of learning and remembering, and why learners forget. It highlights nine practical continuous learning strategies to overcome the forgetting problem.

Years of research have shown that 60-80% of what is taught in courses (instructor-led or eLearning) is not transferred to the job. This has been a source of frustration to trainers for decades. But we now have a solution to this problem because we are at the beginning of a new technology-enabled era in learning: the era of Continuous Learning.

Active learning spaces combine a variety of enabling technologies that foster an evolving pedagogy which is the future of academic education and corporate training.

Presentation: "Lessons Learned from Planning & Implementing Active Learning Spaces"

The planning stage is the 'make or break' step in determining the overall success of campus wide initiatives that strive to renew learning spaces that enhance active learning strategies. Through several small (individual classrooms) to large (new buildings) experiences with planning and implementing active learning spaces on our campus, one pivotal lesson learned has been getting the 'right' stake-holders into the planning stage and fostering productive discussions that will optimize the final spaces for all involved (faculty, students, IT, etc.). Using active learning methods, participants in this session will identify strategies to maximize campus-wide ‘buy-in’ from all stakeholders before environments are built. We will identify those planning team members’ characteristics that lead to productive planning and implementation of active learning spaces and discuss strategies for orchestrating planning teams that represent all stakeholders’ agendas and interests. This session is highly relevant to institutions thinking about embarking on learning space transformations that will align with active, collaborative, real-world teaching coupled with mindful use of technologies that support collaborative pedagogies.

This event also includes a campus tour highlighting Philadelphia University's experimentation and implementation of both formal (classrooms, studios, labs, building-wide) and informal (student center, library) learning spaces. These are innovative, mindfully-designed physical spaces with appropriate technologies which foster active, collaborative, real-world teaching and learning.

PADLA Meeting: Microsoft Technology Center Tour & Software/Hardware Demos

You are cordially invited to join the PA/DE/NJ Distance Learning Association for a visit to the truly state-of-the-art Microsoft Technology Center in Malvern, PA. Whether you are in Corporate, Non-Profit, Higher Ed, or K-12, there will be something for everyone to see and learn.

During this visit, Microsoft Mid-Atlantic representatives will be conducting tours of their impressive facility and discuss some of the emerging Windows 10 based technologies such as Surface Hub and Hololens. This will be followed by in-depth presentations of software products including the PowerPoint MIX add-in allowing users to easily create and share interactive online e-Learning videos and OneNote Class Notebook Creator software to develop lessons in digital notebooks for educators/trainers.

The Malvern MTC has been in operation since 2011, and is co-located with the field sales offices for the northern contingent of employees representing the Mid-Atlantic Sales District of Microsoft. The facility is an executive-class showcase designed to highlight the great solutions that Microsoft has to offer for all types of customers. Tim Pash, the Director, has a team of Architects who are experts in their field and that collaborate to ensure customers understand what our capabilities are and can clearly map them to the business issues they face. Dr. Frank J. Lee is an Associate Professor of Digital Media in the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts and Design at Drexel University with appointments in Psychology, Computer Science, and Biomedical Engineering.

Lee co-founded Drexel's Game Design Program in 2008, currently ranked as one of the Top 5 Best Game Design Programs in U.S. He is also the founding director of the Entrepreneurial Game Studio in the Excite Center at Drexel University.

Past projects have won national and international awards and recognitions and have received extensive national and international media coverage. His most recent project, Skyscraper Tetris, had over 1500 articles and mentions and a world record as the Largest Architectural Videogame Display.

Mobile-ized Information Transfer: Mobile Learning in the Parking Management Industry

Presented by Donald E. Hurford, Vice President, Human Resources @ Parkway Corporation

Info-on-demand is the new status quo for the mobile generation.  Content at one’s fingertips is now taken for granted, and workers now expect that level of access from their employers, particularly in the realms of training and development.  The Parkway Corporation has collaborated with TrainByCell to develop a customized mobile learning site that provides this level of accessibility to our parking operations managers.  Use of this platform has also aided in formalizing transfer of previously “tacit” knowledge within the Parkway Corporation.   Applications of the mobile site that will be demonstrated in this presentation include short job aids, learning videos, long form standard operating procedures,  electronic forms and workflows.

In a world where more and more powerful devices are at everyone’s finger tips, how do you effectively deliver training to an audience that’s not always in front of a desktop computer? mLearning is not a replacement for traditional classroom instruction or eLearning, but it can be a great complement to either or both.  Mobile Info Pro’s technology allows instructional designers (or functional managers) to rapidly deploy content to the devices that their people are constantly carrying; smart phones and tablets.
